What is your opinion on the movie and it's supposedly "Anti-God, Christian, etc." message. If you're unfamiliar with it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Compass_(film) Or find something else to read about it. Would you let your children (if you're a Christian) watch it in fear that they would become Atheist? OR do you even believe this movie is trying to get Atheism into kids' heads? |

It's a book. One that many people have read, children and adults alike. To be honest, I never found that it's got much of an anti christianity message, it just uses christianity for the story. Plus, it's supposed to be another world joining ours, so it's not like it's supposed to be our christianity that's bad.. ![]() However, yes, I would allow my children (if I had any) to watch this, even if I stuck to the bible like a sieve. I'm also sure that my mother (who is a strongly catholic) will also let my sister's watch this movie.

This whole thing about boycotting this movie because it's supposedly 'anti-christ' is absolutely ridiculous. I've read the whole series.. several times (they're my favourite books) over the past 6/7 years, and they have never seem overly anti-christ to me, and I read books properly. Quite honestly I wish these religious nutcases would quit making such a big thing about movies. Apparently it's not okay to not believe in god? Apparently it's not okay to have a book where a faction of the church does what they believe with bad intent and they have 'daemons' . But it's okay for religious people to go around knocking on our doors with leaflets telling us to join their church, it's okay for christmas to be shoved down our throats (and every other religous holiday), okay for a large proportion of them to be homo-phobic because they believe it's wrong.. it's *always* a two-way street with these people. It drives me nuts. Any normal person who follows a faith respects the belief of others, be it another religous or they just don't believe in any god at all. They're stories. Extremely well written, beautiful books which stretch your imagination. Oh my what a sin  |

What about the Harry Potter series? How many hardcore religious people loved those books? How many people were outraged at the stuff contained in the books, how many people loved the movies? This is the same thing. People will see it, because a majority of religious people don't care, because a majority of the people that will see this movie are educated, and know that it is just a movie, and that any form of media is biased. The rest can sit in their homes by themselves and trash talk things that they don't understand. I'm going to see the movie. I'm not sure that it will be any good, but I'm still in search for a fantasy movie on par with Pan's Labrynth. Anyone know of one, let me know. |

The writer was quoted for saying that his books were to undermine the Christian belief, and offer the other side to the "racist and monygomous chronicles of narnia." |

He also stated in an interview in 2003 that his books were about killing God. Seriously people, it's a movie. You didn't see hoards of atheists protesting TCoN, did you? Since when was it alright only to praise someone, and not attack them? |

If someone is malleable enough to change religions after seeing a fictional movie, they really shouldn't be allowed to go on the internet, read books, or even go to school. A movie is a movie is a movie. I've read the books, I love them, and I cannot see how someone who wasn't looking for clues about the hate of the Christian religion could find them, much less be turned by them. |

I read the last one, and I don't see how you couldn't find them :S Like said before, Pullman already stated his books were about undermining the Christian belief and killing God. Now, I'm not supporting the boycott or telling people to not see the movie, I'm just saying that you can't deny the anti-Christian (specifically catholicism) message. |

Of course you can't, that's the point. But if people are really having their faith upset by a movie, maybe they didn't have that much faith in the first place. If they can't handle this then maybe they should rethink their position. I'd like to hear Benjamin's thoughts here though, or at least some theist argument. I hate how it's alright for people to praise someone but not to attack them. |

If someone insults a member of your family, you'd be angry, correct? It's the same for them. One of their major beliefs is being attacked, and they take offense to it, that's just human nature. Whenever a christian posts something attacking evolution here, that christian gets beliddled. As long as they aren't hurting anybody, it's perfectly within their right to voice their opinion about this, and as most of the boycotters have stated, the purpose of it is not to stop the movies from being played, it's to discourage people from seeing it. Unfortunate? Yes. But perfectly within their rights. |

Eh, i couldn't care less about the anti-christianity. What i can't understand however is why they changed the name from Northern Lights for the american version of the book and thus susequently the film :S |

The author said he had nothing against religion, just religion and politics mixing. |

Ha. Well, I don't know much about the book, and I'll have to do some research, but from what I've heard, the author doesn't like Christians and a lot of classic Christian authors like C.S. Lewis and Tolkien.
I'm guessing you're refering to God. There's absolutely no reason to attack God. He created you, loves you, and sent his Son to die on the cross for you. Why attack him for that? |

Now, as an atheist, I'm solidly nonaffected by this whole affair. Yes, Pullman said that his books were about "undermining the Christian belief and killing God," but that doesn't mean that he was trying to get others to be atheist. I will quote from the Newsweek review:
See, if people are fluid enough to change their religion just from reading a book, watching a movie, or, hell, even going on the internet, than that means that they were more than likely having doubts about it in the first place. Even a devout Christian/Catholic/whatever can go and watch the movie. It's just a way to kill a couple hours, enjoy yourself, and see how horribly Hollywood mangled the book. |

The problem they see is not the fact that they may be swayed by it, but that it's a children's film, and they believe children will be swayed to atheism by it. |
