What do you want to see?
What better way to decide what should be happening in the skinning section of this board than to ask what the people want! This is your chance to express what you would like to see at the moment and in the future. If you have ideas for skins, colour schemes, code snippets then it would be best if you left them out. This topic is solely for the purpose of picking up what everyone wants. Although things like "I would like to see more dark skins." are fine. Big or small, all sugestions are welcome. ^_^

Here are some ideas you may want to talk about:
Quote:

- Skins in general, the amount of them or of a certain type. e.g. Too many of one kind not enough of the other etc.
- WOW! standards.
- Zetaboards documentation/ released resources.
- Skinning activity in general, from staff/ members.
- Skinning documentation.
- Skinning competitions and fun stuff around SZ.
- Your thoughts on SZ large competitions such as future skinning leagues etc.

Keeping your post concise and to the point would be a great help, bullet points are preferable.

I fink all mai skinz shud b wow.

Nah, I realise what you're looking for here.

  1. Addition of more skins that people would actually use — it's common now to see a board not given the time of day if it doesn't have an impressive skin. So what you need are skins on par with, or better than ideally, the good-looking boards opening. Look into web design trends of the moment, etc. I also feel there are mostly skins of that style being submitted. I mean skins with OSS MTs, covered in pen tool shapes with song titles as names etc. Not emo, but I don't know the word for it. They're cool, but not the only thing I want to see :)
  2. WOW! standards should possibly be dropped a little. I'm not sure; I believe the last skin to be WOW!'d was Tue's Arctic skin, and that was some time ago. Perhaps review the recent submissions? I haven't been watching them, but I'm sure people have outdone Arctic since!
  3. Zetaboards: I don't think you need worry about this yet. I know you need to be top of the game, but this isn't an area of my interest.
  4. Activity... Yeah we need that. Perhaps implement a system whereby people post WIPs if they're not going to finish them, then others can 'finish the fight'?
  5. Skinning documentations really need to be completely redesigned. They're hardly used now. Or maybe it's cause I can't be bothered shelling through the 1000 documentations I already could write myself! It'd be nice if we could organise them ourself. Can it be done? USE THE WEBSITE! Make a Wiki or something? Get creative, SZ! Alternatively have difficulty/advancement level-based subforums so we know what we're actually looking at.
  6. Skinning competitions are probably not as successful as we'd like — but mostly cause we're lazy. Maybe start them off as skin-the-index competitions, or just as print competitions, as opposed to full-skin comps. That way you'll get more entries?
  7. Future large-scale competitions won't work, IMO, unless they're seriously well organised. People just seem too lazy to consistently produce skins for a competition. Maybe I'm wrong; I hope I am!

Untrue. I always use them if I don't know how to do a certain thing. This is the first place I look in if I have a problem before creating a support topic. If that' removed then that's another skinner that Invisionfree just lost. :/

Firstly, in my opinion, the SZ Skinning (& gfx) leagues should've never been canceled. I enjoyed watching the action, and if anyone in fact, became lazy and never posted an entry, I believe they'd deserve to loose their battle. I can't wait to see some more SZ Leagues in the future!

As far as skinning goes, I'd like to see some more inventive skins. Such as, new maintitle designs, new skin layouts, and in particular, I'd like to see people use the technique used by TipTopOlive in the Cp38 skin in which he adds images to the left and right sides of the forum tables.

What I mean by new skin designs and layouts, I'd like to see something more along the lines of illustrator type skins. I'm pretty sure alot of us have seen graphics with alot of fancy pen-tool designs & such, and I think it's cool to have vector type designs integrated in with skins. Friction Evolved had a skin that describes my exact thoughts but they've taken it down since then.

I'd also like to see more color combinations. I believe there are skinners good enough to take a design such as, pink/black, or grey/black color schemes, and make them flow and work well together.

Just a few of my thoughts. B)

--> I think that more skins using the pentool will be nice. maybe bring back TTO's style but add your own twist as well.. thats basically what I've been practicing.

--> More consistent skinners. Perhaps see more skinners out that try to come up with new styles and techniques to contribute.

--> A pretty color scheme. Like teal and salmon pink.. tasty too ^_^

It'd be nice to see less skins (I'd rather this be with themes on ZetaBoards since it looks so much better) that focus less on an individuals Photoshop "skills" and "originality" with colors, and focus more on the content. Lately a lot of skins have been using gradients everywhere possible, even where there is text. This makes it a bit harder to read, especially with the ongoing trend of extremely hard to read text.

So, yeah, more focus on content.

I agree. There are too many skins with gradients everywhere; it makes the skin an eye sore. Although it may look nice on the preview it really isn't user friendly.

I'd like to see a lot personally. I would like to see less skins that focus on design and originality, but rather more skins that are focused on usability and have a "community" feel to it. I see a lot of nicely designed skins released here, however, I don't see a lot of them as being intended to be used on forums. I'd rather see skins that are more focused on usability rather than effective design or effective tricks. Even if this means going simple, I would like to see it.

I'd also like to see more skinning discussion happening. More threads about design and skinning, etc. I see some threads, but none really seem to bring about a long discussion.

Competitions, in my opinion, should be more consistent. I'd like to see more collaboration battles and individual, very specific competitions, whether hosted by staff or not. It's be interesting to see more and more variety and stipulations in battles. In regards to the Skinning League, I think it should be handled by a group of staff members, rather than just by Locke. Also, cut it down to only 16 participants, or let anyone who wants to enter be allowed to enter, and create a unique bracket to fit the entries. :)

Thanks Nivexonix. ^_^

Remember that if you have specific competition ideas, you can PM them to any member of the design team. :)

At the end of the month (pretty much today) I will take these points to be discussed among the rest of the staff. I will post the conclusions here. :)
