Generally, of the little bit of skinning I have done, it's all been about the usability and function of the design. However, there are other designers who have, at times, been more centralized around the art behind the design -- whether in its concept, or in the final project. Personally, I think the usability is the single most important factor to a skin or theme. But having said that, I admire the more artistic pieces that have been created over the years and those are the ones that I would want to play around with. I've had moments where I've seen a sculpture or painting and wanted to base a skin off of it. So what do you think? What inspires you? Or do you see skins/themes not as artistic expression? |

I personally think that skin/theme is an art. Art doesn't have to be something fancy or mesmerizing; the final product that you think and work hard on is art itself whether it's simple or complex. I myself get inspired by many art movements that I've studied. However, trying to incorporate those styles into skin/theme is an impossible task because I always get a different product from what I've imagined. But yes, I do think that skin/theme is an art. Skin/theme deals with design and design is art itself. |

I think they can be both an art from, and at the same time be usable. If anything, I would think the more usable a skin, the more I'd regard it as a piece of art. I think any form of design could be considered art though, because it still requires imagination and inspiration to create, which for the most part is what art is. |

Anything that has to do with html is a art because yea you can learn it and get better but some people are a natural at it. Like with art, skins can aww people. There are good skins and bad skins but people always get better and there is something always new |

I don't really follow you in that comment, I don't think. I can make the leap that skin/theme design is art, but I don't believe that scripting is art. |

I don't think scripting is an art - it's more of a job, really. You practice, learn "on-the-job", and gradually get better at it. You can't really be a natural scripter. But skins/themes/graphics, in my opinion, are an art form. Any real art form takes tools, and in this case, the tool would be the computer, graphics program, and your mouse. |

Well, of course. I was hoping you would explain why you see it as art.

I concur; anything that needs one's imagination to create I see it as art. |
