I recommend Photoshop, it destroys gimp anyday. Besides, gimp is way to basic, you wont get much done with it.

I have to disagree to an extent. I've been able to do some of the same things I've done in Photoshop with GIMP, it just requires some different steps. The biggest difference for me is probably with text options.

As for tutorials, I'm not sure of any to link you to, but I can give some advice; take things step by step. Being impatient isn't an option with GIMP- just do things one at a time, and you really shouldn't have much problem.

The thing I actually like about the GIMP is that it helps you to learn what you're actually doing- individual gradients, manual borders, etc. I have to say that it's not nearly as bad once you get used to it, just the layout can be confusing at first.

Skinning-wise, it shouldn't be all that bad, really. Just play around with the shape tools (rectangular, circular, etc), gradients, and layer options. Experiment with the colours and tools. ^^

I agree with Jenny ^^. I've seen some maintitle tutorials for GIMP but unfortunately I lost the link for them. GIMPtalk.org is a great place for tutorials and they might have some maintitle tutorials lying around. But the important thing to is experiment around, looking at other people's MTs and create your own style.

I use GIMP but I've never tried making a skin with it, but I belive there is no limit to what program your using for your skin graphics.

I recommend it. You can make some pretty nice stuff for skins with it. It's just as good as PhotoShop, but requires a little bit more patience.
