How do you mean "their forum"? O__o Are you talking about their CSS, etc, or the entire forum, or what? If you mean their CSS, why do it at all, whether it is technically ripping or not? I'd say just use the IF Default skin to be safe. Otherwise it could still probably be considered ripping, because you could use their color scheme, unique variations of code, etc, while still changing the images. Think of it like this: If you wrote a really great book about a kid named Joe and his dragon, would you want someone to write a story with the same plot, except using 'Bob' and his 'alien'? '^^; If I'm completely out of line, someone just tell me, lol. I just know how I would feel about the subject. |

So you mean about taking other people's code and editing it to your liking? I think it is. |

Probably. I would just start from scratch and then ask questions about parts of the skin that you want to edit or whatever. |

To me, that's ripping, but that may be just me. You may not 'phisically' rip anything since you're ripping an whole idea. True, creation nowadays is all about getting ideas from various places, but you should try to assemble them together in a way that's your own. The division line here is a bit thin and hard to see, so I'm going to give an example. Let's say I like Monalisa and paint it exactly as it was painted by Da Vinci; to me that would be ripping. Now let's say I paint Monalisa but change her face, her smile, colors and add new things to create a parody; to me that wouldn't be ripping. I hope I'm managing to get my point across since I'm bad at explaining things. |

I don't know man, Bob and his Dragon could be a hit. Have you seen how you can come out with the same thing every time and still have people buy it? (example: Madden) Anyway, I would play it safe and make your own skin. Or put up a ticket here for a new one, there are plenty of capable people. |

Lol nice. But Bob had the alien. xP *shot* ..XD Yeah, I thought of doing a real-life example, but people tend to be stupid and love it anyway. For example: You KNOW Christopher Paolini (author of Eragon) is a Star Wars buff. Kid never knows parents. Turns out father is uber famous evil dude. Raised by uncle in nowhere. Servants of "the Empire" end up killing uncle. Enraged kid swears revenge and discovers his uber destiny. Follows old man who lives nearby who is actually former famous hero as his apprentice. x'3 I could go on and on. I LOVE Eragon and Eldest, but OH MY GOD is it a fantasy-dragon Star Wars knock off. Lol.
OH MY GOD! X__X YES that's stealing!! I don't know or care what actually defines "ripping", but it's still SOME form of stealing. If you like an image used in a skin, make your own yourself BASED on it, with your own unique twists. Like Sakuragi said- it'd be like painting the Mona Lisa, but with different colors and a few tweaks. That'd be fine. But if you make an exact replica- or to parallel your situation, get a camera and take a picture of it- you canNOT sell it claiming it as your own. Now, if you absolutely MUST use someone else's work rather than making your own, don't screenshot and steal. PM the person: "Hey, I really like this ONE image in your ___ skin. Would you mind if I used it for my ___ skin? I'll give you credit for the image, and make the other images myself, but I really love that one image of yours." Possibly a bit more professional or something, but you get the idea. Then if they say yes, keep your word and give credit. If they say no, kindly say 'thanks anyway' and get over it. |

I have to agree. Copying anything of anyone's work is a form of stealing and ripping. Even if you give credit you need permission first. Most of us who make skins may spend hours or weeks on a really good one. That maintitle you took might have been hours of work. She needs credit and should have been asked before you took it. |

Whaaa?? Copying or using anything that is not yours is technically ripping, if it took them hours of work. Would it be fair if it only took you a couple of seconds to just use their work? If it took me an hour to make a game called "Blob", if someone just took the same game code and named it "Slime" then that is still ripping. I just don't like the idea of copying someone else's work. |

How do you figure? At any rate, I'm honestly starting to feel sorry for you. Do you honestly not care if people call you a thief? Do you not get any sense of accomplishment from making your own stuff and knowing when people like it that you made it all by yourself? Really, are you listening to anyone at all? This would be like taking a photo of a famous picture, then trying to sell it as your own work. It's ILLEGAL. Period. |

If you do it properly, noone can accuse you of anything, aswell as, think about this, its the internet, everything is ripped from something. For i,e IFSZ, ive seen this skin ripped atleast 100 times. And you know what? Nothing happened, people live on, if you think you need it that much, just credit the real author, and leave it be as your skin. What can happen? Nothing. So who cares? |

Just replacing the images is easy, the actual coding and padding editing is the hard part..
