For a school project in a visual communications class we have to do a project, about anything really. So I decided to pick.. Skinning an IF forum and maybe added a free hosted webpage as a splash page or intro. Obviously im going to have to do it at home too, becasue we only get about 2 weeks, but..

Will this be too hard you think? ive never skinned IF, but I did make an ok ZB one ( slate in the theme board ) is it hard to pick it up real quickly? ive never applied myself to skinning really so I dont know but I am definitely interested right now.

Just curious about making buttons since this would be my main issue, HOW do they do it? how do you make them look real and depthy, I try but it seems like it doesnt turn out, I just want to know a couple of tools/effects you guys use.

Depends on a few things...
  • a. How much time can you allocate to this project? If you've never skinner IF and have no previous experience with CSS, the skin won't be all that amazing even if you put tons of hours into it. Also, since you're asking about making buttons, I get the idea that you're not all that experienced in Photoshop.
    b. How high are you expectations? If they're very high, then don't start on this project. Find something you know you can do well, rather than gambling that you can do something great for the first time - which is pretty unlikely at best.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea. Stick to your strengths, and get an A. After that you can start experimenting and getting better at skinning and graphics. Then next time a project like this comes around you can be prepared to do a great job. :)

I agree with Logan, get the hang of CSS and graphical design before you actually make one for a serious school project ;) .

Here are my tips:

Play with the css, but dont start off with nothing, take a skin and edit it, get used to the css and the board wrapper. Then, you gotta know what photoshop is, and if you dont, and cant use it, ask someone/request it.

- Ive been playing with ipb 1.3 and photoshop for years, and i still dont know all of the css, so, just saying, you should give it a chance, but dont expect it to be easy..
