Sign-up names won't work though. When a username is changed, it makes the old one free to use by anyone else. What if I sign up as Moonface, change my name to Sunbum, then someone else makes a new Moonface account? You now have two Moonface names used on sign-up that the tagging code has to try and work with to target the correct user. |

I didn't know here sign up name was gone when changing username. Sign up name and display name/username were seperate things on the other board. The sign up name never changed even if the username did. I guess the sign up name would be akin to user id here. Though there was still user id. Sign up name - permanent Username - change to whatever they wanted any number of times unless admin used a plugin to stop it User id was the which number member they were when they signed up. I. E. Admin would be 1 and next member 2 etc. So profile URL would be: http://************.***/user/2 for second member that signed up to the board. Edited by Chelonian, Sep 17 2016, 08:17 PM.

I'd expect (hope; I've not seen the code, but, as someone who writes code, I have some idea of how I'd expect it to work at least) that the BBCode can be preprocessed. |

If I type @Quozzo then the server could query the database and retrieve the members ID, then replace the tag with its BBcode equivalent on the server. `[user=2070103][/user]` When viewing a post with the tag, it is parsed as bbcode which queries the server and retrieves the user's username. Even if it has changed afterwards. The space between the tags could contain the username. It won't affect anything, its just for show so the user who quoted the post will know who user 2070103 is. When the post is edited it could update the username between the tags but may be inconsistant with the actual username if it has changed before the post was edited. Instead, when quoting a post it could query the database for each tag and replace the username inside the tag with the users current username. Each post would need to track who has been tagged and who hasnt, so when the post is edited and someone new has been tagged, it will only notify the new user, it wont renotify everyone that is tagged in the post again. So to sum it up

I updated the main post. Any comments on the other things? Particulary the smilies problem? And the move post to another topic problem.

I don't think this should be a default feature for various reasons:

While I agree, browsers nowadays are smart enough not to load everything until the user wants to see it. |
