On the bottom right on post pages, where it has the options for editing selected posts, I think there should be a merge feature where you combine two or three consecutive posts into one. There's a "Split posts" feature anyway, and I know that the CP has a merge posts feature but that's for the entire forum, I don't really want to globally merge posts, but for that one random occasion that happens now and then it'd be nice to be able to do that quickly. Just a thought. |

I really like this idea - basically the multiple posting in a row function but manual.

Yes, that's a good idea indeed. Especially for people, like me, who don't like auto merging feature. |

How would it work in terms of merging posts by different posters? Or would that not be possible? |

Possible, all the messages below certain post at the very top of all the posts to merge would be merged to it. Post count remains unchanged, or Posts merging would work same as posts hidding (so, post count is decreased). |

Well, when I was thinking of this I was just thinking of it only being possible if it's posts by the same member to work the same as the merging feature in the CP, but as Cody said, manual. But as Nemomon said it could be made to do any I guess *shrug* |

That might create difficulties or conflict with identifying who posted what. Edit: I suppose you could have like a [hr] and "Following message originally posted by Pete B " or something... Also, if you wanted to merge posts over multiple pages, you'd have trouble and may have fiddle around with the posts set to display per topic page option. With topics you can just bump them up. I think merging posts of different users would become confusing, especially if members aren't aware their posts are being put with someone else's. Not only that, but I can't then edit my post because it's in someone else's post, so I have to make a new reply if I want to make an edit. It would be much better to just let merging work for posts by the one member, not merging multiple members posts together. |

If just merging posts by individual members is better then by all means work with that, it would be using the feature to combine several posts by one guy into one, so it's not like having it available for any member is an issue. If it wouldn't work, then so be it. |

Well, I personally think a merging option would make it easier for any staff to deal with double-posting (some of us don't approve of it at their forums, after all, and prefers a neat site). I also personally think it should be possible to choose to merge multiple posts made by two or more members, since we never really know what's going to happen and there may be a need for it, but like Moonface said, it'd be annoying to not be able to edit a post of yours that was merged, so it'd probably be better to keep merging to only multiple posts by a single member.

I don't think that merging posts feature needs to identify who posted what. If Staff will want do that, he always may edit that merged post and divide it into sections. The idea of it is that it merges multiple posts into one no matter who posted what. In fact there is a problem with multiple pages of given topic, but this is true not only for merging posts, but for example for trashing posts as well. I don't think so. If You are a Member of given board, You are aware, and agree to, that Staff may do everything with Your topics or posts. If Staff Member decided to merge my post with another Member post, I must agree to that, or leave the board. Staff Member nor his features don't need to contact me and tell me how they moderated my content - it is just their good will. If this merging will block me from editing my message - probably Staff Member had a reason for that. Edited by Nemomon, Jan 12 2011, 03:03 PM.

Yes but when you can trash a post, then change page, and trash another. If you wanted to merge two posts you have to have both posts on the same page. With the current system at least. |

Yes and no. Generally You are right, but if You will add ?x=value to link, usually You will be able to merge what You want, for example: http://if.invisionfree.com/topic/5107969/1/?x=5 Of course max value of X is 100, so You won't merge 99th post with 101st. |

I don't see why merging posts of different users is a problem here. If the admin using this feature wants to do it, let them. It's as simple as the first post in the merge being the post author, or using Pete B's divider option. I fully support this suggestion. I've had many instances where merging posts would be handy, considering I despise the auto merge feature. |

Has this been solved, is there a code allowing staff to merge selected posts without depending on the automatic merge posts function ? |
